Date: September 2004
Collaboration:
• MSU
• University of Warsaw
• CEN Bordeaux-Gradignan
• University of Tennessee
• Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Goal of the experiment:
• production rate for 45Fe:
• background suppression for 45Fe
• transmission to S1
Experimental details:
• 58Ni beam at 160 MeV/u, 7pnA
• differnt production targets
• A1900 fragment separator
• one or two degrader wedges at I1 and/or I2
• DE - TOF particle ID system at A1900 focal plane and in S1 vault
Figure 1: Layout of the MSU facility with its coupled cyclotrons, the A1900 fragment separator and its experimental vaults.
Measurements:
• production tests with different isotopes from different production targets as a function of the magnetic rigidity Br
• consistently higher rates for nickel targets as compared to beryllium
• increase of difference with exoticism of fragments
Figure 2: Production yields for different iron isotopes from different targets as a function of the magnetic rigidity. For the more exotic isotopes, the increase with the nickel target is more important.
Production rates:
• one 45Fe per hour at A1900 focal plane for a 7pnA 58Ni beam
• one 45Fe per hour in the S1 vault for same conditions
• one 49Ni per hours at A1900 focal plane
Figure 3: Identification of the first 45Fe isotopes at MSU. A production rate of one 45Fe per hour for 7pnA was determined. A 50% transmission to the S1 vault was also found.
Conclusion:
• with increased primary beam intensity about 100 45Fe per week achievable
• even 48Ni could be studied
• manageable background conditions, in particular with double wedge
• possibility of high-precision decay study of 45Fe
